Fred Castilho is a master drummer and educator with deep roots in Brazilian percussion. A core member of Monobloco since 2000, Fred has performed worldwide with iconic artists including Gilberto Gil, Seu Jorge, Baden Powell, and Blue Man Group. Co-founder of the award-winning Orquestra Frevo Diabo and holder of a Master's degree from UNIRIO, Fred brings precision, authenticity, and decades of international experience to every session.

Biography

Fred Castilho is a drummer, educator, and long-time member of Monobloco whose career spans international tours, award-winning projects, and collaborations with iconic Brazilian and global artists. With deep roots in Brazilian percussion and decades of performance experience, Fred brings precision, authenticity, and musical excellence to every session. A core member of Monobloco since 2000, Fred has performed and recorded with the group in concerts, DVDs, and special projects alongside major artists including Jon Secada, Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho, Lenine, Fernanda Abreu, Pepeu Gomes, Carlos Malta & Pife Muderno, Spok Frevo Orquestra, Blue Man Group, Fundo de Quintal, Fernando & Sorocaba, and Preta Gil. Through Monobloco's educational program, Fred has taught workshops and masterclasses around the world, including Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Denmark, England, Ireland, and the United States. Beyond Monobloco, Fred has performed with renowned artists such as Baden Powell, Gabriel Moura, Seu Jorge, Sérgio Loroza, Rita Benedito, Armando Lobo, Thiago Amud, Daniel Marques, and UFRJazz. Together with Armando Lobo and Daniel Marques, he co-founded the Orquestra Frevo Diabo, winner of the prestigious Prêmio de Música Brasileira in 2010 in the category of Best Regional Group. Fred's journey began in 1997 with Farofa Carioca, where he met Seu Jorge and Gabriel Moura. He later joined the rhythm section for the legendary Baden Powell in his final performances, as part of the Quartet Cai Dentro alongside Baden's son, pianist Philippe Baden Powell. With a Master's degree in Music from UNIRIO and training from world-class drummers including Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine, Phil Maturano, Ron Caruso, and Gary Chaffee, Fred's career spans continents, genres, and generations of Brazilian music. His experience, authenticity, and musical breadth make him an exceptional contributor to any performance or recording.
