Biography
Julio Florindo is a Rio de Janeiro–born bassist, arranger, and producer whose artistry embodies the richness of Brazilian music and the versatility of global fusion. Born in December 1986, Julio began his formal music studies at the age of 13, guided by masters such as Maurício "Hulk" Almeida, Luis Louchard, Aluízio Veras, Raul D'Oliveira, and Antonio Arzolla, while also studying guitar with Ricardo Ventura. From an early age, he was immersed in the vibrant rhythms of samba and Brazilian popular music. By 15, his curiosity led him toward jazz, fusion, and contemporary improvisation — genres that would expand his artistic voice. A graduate of UNIRIO with a Bachelor's degree in Double Bass, Julio also served as a teaching assistant to Professor Haroldo Mauro Jr., supporting classes in Improvisation Techniques (TECIM). Over two decades of career, Julio has become one of the most respected and in-demand bassists in Brazil. As a performer and recording artist, he has shared the stage with legendary names such as Dona Ivone Lara, Zeca Pagodinho, Emílio Santiago, Eduardo Dussek, Leci Brandão, Sombrinha, Dudu Nobre, Ana Costa, Beth Carvalho, Toquinho, Moacyr Luz, Aldir Blanc, Mart'nália, Zélia Duncan, Lenine, and Gilberto Gil, among many others. Beyond the concert stage, Julio has contributed to dozens of acclaimed musical theater productions, including The Color Purple, Xanadu, Man of La Mancha, and Cazuza – The Musical, showcasing his range as both performer and arranger. A lifelong student of rhythm and culture, Julio has also played an active role in Rio de Janeiro's celebrated carnival scene for over 15 years, serving as rhythm director and percussionist across leading samba schools and street ensembles. His work in restructuring the city's street carnival movement — offering consultancy and musical direction — has helped shape a new generation of Rio's musical expression. When not on stage, Julio explores a variety of instruments, from guitar and cavaquinho to piano, clarinet, and percussion, teaching and mentoring new musicians in Brazilian rhythm and harmony. Currently, Julio tours internationally as bassist and musical director for Leila Pinheiro, and performs with Diogo Nogueira's band, bringing his powerful groove and refined artistry to audiences across Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia. A musician of depth, precision, and passion, Julio Florindo stands as a true ambassador of Brazilian music — a bridge between tradition and innovation, rhythm and soul.
