Early in his development, he trained with several of Brazil's most respected musicians, including Célia Vaz, Alexandre Carvalho, Nelson Faria, and Yuri Popov. In 1992, he began his formal music degree at Universidade Estácio de Sá in Rio de Janeiro, and in 1993 he moved to California to study at the renowned Musicians Institute (MI) in the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT). During his time there, Sérgio studied with legendary guitarists such as Scott Henderson, Robben Ford, Frank Gambale, and Jeff Berlin, and participated in workshops with Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Joe Diorio, and Paul Gilbert. He graduated from GIT with honors. After completing his studies, Sérgio performed at the 29th Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland alongside vocalist Marília Ciribelli, his colleague from MI.
