Biography
Rafael Barata was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro and started playing drums at the age of 5. His entire childhood was surrounded by music. Samba—and especially bossa nova—were his playground, always making music with his father, Roberto Mendes, and his brother, Roberto Barata, both musicians. This rich musical culture from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, helped shape his drumming into a globally recognized reference. He began his studio career at the age of 14 and went on to win two International Brazilian Drums contests: the 1st Batuka at age 15, and the Batuka Masters in 2000 at age 20. Around the same time, he began performing with legendary samba jazz musicians from the 1960s, which introduced him to the world of jazz. This experience deeply shaped his musical language, eventually leading him to New York, where he began performing with top jazz artists. Since then, Rafael has recorded and performed with a remarkable list of internationally acclaimed artists, including Emilio Santiago, Rosa Passos, Eliane Elias, Marc Johnson, Kenny Barron, Edu Lobo, Leny Andrade, Lisa Ono, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Werner, Toots Thielemans, Antonia Bennett, Esperanza Spalding, Christian McBride, Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Romero Lubambo, and many others. He was the house drummer at Mistura Fina, Rio de Janeiro's renowned jazz venue, for many years, performing alongside pianist Osmar Milito and bassist Augusto Mattoso. There, he shared the stage with international artists such as Russell Ferrante, John Pizzarelli, Jane Monheit, Karrin Allyson, Kevin Letau, Mike Stern, and many others. Since the early 2000s, Rafael has toured worldwide, performing at major jazz festivals and concert halls with projects such as the Cello Samba Trio (with Jaques Morelenbaum and Lula Galvão), with Grammy-winning artist Eliane Elias, and more recently with multi-Grammy winner Dianne Reeves. He also performs with Dave Zinno's quintet Unisphere and leads his own project, i Trio, alongside André Vasconcellos and Eduardo Farias. He is a multi-Grammy-nominated drummer, with credits including Eliane Elias' Made in Brazil and other acclaimed projects. As an educator, Rafael has presented clinics and masterclasses at leading institutions worldwide, including Berklee College of Music, University of Southern California, Brown University, and Sibelius Academy. Known as "The Traveler," Rafael continues to perform globally while also engaging in remote sessions, online performances, and music education.
