Biography
Rômulo Gomes, born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, began his musical journey playing guitar in rock bands and performing six- and seven-string acoustic guitar in traditional Brazilian choro ensembles. He later established himself as a highly skilled double bassist and electric bassist, building a 40-year career marked by extensive experience across bailes, festivals, instrumental groups, studio recordings, and live performances. Throughout his career, he has frequently worked as an arranger, instrumentalist, and producer, in addition to being a composer and vocalist — a rare combination for a bassist in Brazilian music. His artistic expertise led to a notable creative partnership with the late legendary composer Johnny Alf. As a bassist, Rômulo has performed and recorded with some of the most important names in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethânia, João Bosco, Ivan Lins, João Donato, Hermeto Pascoal, Gal Costa, and many others, as well as international artists such as Luciano Pavarotti. Across recordings and performances, his discography includes participation in more than 1,500 tracks. He was a member of Maria Bethânia's band for a decade (1999–2009), later returning for additional projects in 2018 alongside Zeca Pagodinho, and again during the 2022–2023 season. He has also participated in multiple editions of the Prêmio da Música Brasileira, contributing as bassist, arranger assistant, vocal assistant, and copyist for live shows, tours, and DVD recordings. In 2015, he won the Prêmio da Música Brasileira with the ZR Trio, alongside Zé Renato and Tutty Moreno. In addition to his performance career, Rômulo is an active educator, teaching double bass, guitar, harmony, arrangement, and music production. He has served as a professor at the Festival de Música de Londrina in multiple editions and holds a postgraduate degree in Popular Music Education. As a singer and composer, his work reflects deep influences from Brazilian music traditions as well as selected international styles, which he incorporates into his performances. He is a versatile artist, capable of performing solo (voice and guitar), with a full band, or in hybrid live formats where he uses technology to build arrangements in real time, including percussion, bass, guitar, and vocal layers. Currently, in addition to his solo work and personal productions, Rômulo performs with artists such as Altay Veloso, Ricardo Silveira, Jane Duboc, Leila Pinheiro, and projects like Aluayê – Os Novos Afro-Sambas, among others. Rômulo Gomes is an artist on the Zênitha Música label.
